10.2 Propagation of Sound
Sound produced by vibrating objects travels through a medium to reach our ears. The medium can be solid, liquid, or gas. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because it requires particles to transmit the vibrations. Experiments show that sound travels through solids (e.g., knocking on a desk and hearing it through the desk), liquids (e.g., tapping spoons underwater), and gases (air). The vacuum bell jar experiment demonstrates that when air is removed, sound becomes faint and eventually inaudible, confirming that sound needs a medium to propagate. In outer space, where there is a near vacuum, sound cannot travel, which is why astronauts cannot hear sounds directly during spacewalks and use special communication devices instead.

🧪 Activity: Activity 10.3: Listening to sound through air and through a desk; Activity 10.4: Tapping spoons in air and underwater to observe sound propagation.
🔗 Connection: This section prepares the understanding of sound waves and their nature of propagation through media, leading to the next section on sound waves.
