3.3 Animal Tissues
Animal tissues are groups of similar cells specialized to perform specific functions. The four main types are epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues. Epithelial tissues form protective coverings on body surfaces and line internal organs. They consist of closely packed cells with minimal intercellular space, preventing entry of germs and reducing water loss. Different types of epithelial tissues are adapted for functions such as exchange, protection, secretion, sensory reception, and absorption. Connective tissues connect and support other tissues and organs; examples include blood, bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Muscular tissues produce voluntary and involuntary movements; skeletal muscles enable conscious movement, smooth muscles control involuntary organ movements, and cardiac muscles pump the heart continuously. Nervous tissue consists of neurons specialized for receiving, processing, and transmitting messages, coordinating body functions and responses. Together, these tissues enable complex life processes in animals.
