Cell Theory — The Unifying Principle of Biology

The Cell Theory is a fundamental principle in biology stating that:

• All living organisms are made up of one or more cells.
• The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living beings.
• All cells arise from pre-existing cells.

This theory was developed through the work of scientists Matthias Schleiden (plants), Theodor Schwann (animals), and Rudolf Virchow (cell division). It unifies biology by explaining that life is continuous through cell division.

Cells grow, divide, perform functions, and eventually die. The process of contact inhibition prevents cells from dividing uncontrollably. Cancer cells lose this control, leading to tumor formation. Plant cells grow differently due to their rigid cell walls.

Programmed Cell Death (PCD) is a genetically regulated process essential for development and immune function, such as forming fingers by eliminating cells between digits during embryonic development.

Plant cells exhibit totipotency, the ability to develop into a complete plant under suitable conditions, forming the basis of plant tissue culture technology.
