Classification of Animals
This section explains the classification of animals into major groups based on their body structure, symmetry, and other characteristics. Animals are broadly divided into two groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates have a backbone or vertebral column, while invertebrates lack it. Invertebrates are further classified into groups such as porifera (sponges), coelenterata (jellyfish), platyhelminthes (flatworms), nematoda (roundworms), annelida (segmented worms), arthropoda (insects, spiders, crustaceans), and mollusca (snails, octopus). Vertebrates are classified into fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The section describes the characteristics of each group with examples, such as body symmetry, presence of skeleton, mode of reproduction, and habitat. This classification helps in understanding the evolutionary relationships and adaptations of animals to their environments.
