RED RIBBON EXPRESS (RRE)

The Red Ribbon Express (RRE) was a nationwide communication campaign aimed at generating awareness about HIV/AIDS across India. A specially designed train traveled over 9,000 km annually, covering 180 districts and halting at stations to reach 43,200 villages. The train comprised seven coaches equipped with educational materials on HIV/AIDS, interactive touch screens, 3-D models, services addressing HIV-TB co-infection, an LCD projector, folk performance platforms, counseling cabins, and doctors' cabins for counseling and treatment. Starting from Kanyakumari, it followed a 'parikrama' style route, halting at stations where performing artists divided into groups to conduct Information Education Communication (IEC) activities such as street plays, folk songs, storytelling, and group counseling in villages. Local youth groups joined these efforts. The project was implemented by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), UNICEF, UNAIDS, and Indian Railways. Its aims included spreading information on primary prevention services, reducing stigma and discrimination against people with AIDS, and enhancing knowledge about preventive measures, health habits, and lifestyle. The RRE exemplifies a multimedia campaign coordinating multiple stakeholders to break silence about HIV/AIDS in rural India, using mass media and interpersonal communication to create awareness and promote behavioral change.
