Processes related to agricultural practices

Ensuring the quality of inputs is vital for successful agricultural practices. Two key processes are soil testing and seed selection. Soil testing assesses physical (texture, water holding capacity), chemical (pH, nutrient content, organic matter), and biological (microbial presence) parameters to maintain soil fertility. Soil samples should be collected carefully from different spots in a field, avoiding shady areas and fertiliser storage sites. The sample is dried, crushed, sieved, and mixed to obtain a representative sample. The mason jar test helps determine soil texture by layering sand, silt, and clay after shaking a soil-water-soap mixture and letting it settle. Soil texture affects water retention and root growth; for example, high clay content (>20%) causes waterlogging, while high sand content (>80%) reduces water retention. Soil pH testing identifies acidity or alkalinity, influencing nutrient availability. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6-7). Acidic soils can be amended by adding compost, wood ash, lime, or dolomite, while alkaline soils can be treated with extra watering, compost, gypsum, or sulphur-containing fertilisers. Seed selection involves germination tests and treatments to improve seed quality. The floating method uses salt water to separate damaged or hollow seeds that float from healthy seeds that sink. Seed dormancy, a natural survival mechanism, can be broken by treatments like soaking in hot water. Organic fertilisers like vermicompost and organic pesticides such as Dashaparni arka, made from local plant leaves, cow dung, and cow urine, support sustainable farming practices.
