Interior Design

Interior design focuses on planning and improving indoor spaces to make them comfortable, functional, safe, and visually pleasing. It involves understanding how people use a space and making thoughtful changes in layout, colour, lighting, furniture, and décor to enhance everyday use. Key terms include layout, which is the arrangement of furniture and elements in a space; theme, the overall style or idea used in designing a space; and sustainability, which involves using materials and methods that reduce waste and protect the environment. Essential tools for interior design include measuring tapes or scales for room and furniture dimensions, rulers or set squares for drawing accurate layouts and angles, stationery for sketches, layouts, and mood boards, cardboard or recycled materials for making models or mock-ups, and paint swatches or fabric samples for selecting colours and textures. Quality parameters ensure the redesigned space fits its intended use, provides comfort and ergonomics by allowing easy movement, maintains aesthetics through harmonious colours and lighting, uses sustainable materials, and is neat with clean finishing and housekeeping. Safety parameters include tool safety by using cutters and scissors carefully, maintaining an organised workspace to avoid clutter, using paints and adhesives in well-ventilated areas, maintaining safe posture and movement, and cleaning up waste after work. The process involves identifying a space needing improvement, measuring and planning layout and décor, preparing drawings or models, delivering the design by arranging furniture and décor, monitoring quality, collecting feedback, and reflecting on improvements. Interior design enhances the usability and appeal of indoor environments, contributing to better living and working conditions.
