11.9 Delivering the service
Delivering a tourism service involves careful execution of planned activities, engaging with tourists, ensuring safety, and managing logistics.
11.9.1 Pre-tour checklist:
Prepare a detailed schedule including timings, tasks, and locations. For example, assembly time, welcome briefing, consent form filling, start and end times, rest stops, refreshments, and feedback collection. Also, prepare a checklist of materials needed on the day, such as itinerary sheets, consent forms, first-aid kits, scripts, maps, microphones, waste bags, gloves, and promotional brochures.
11.9.2 Engaging with tourists:
Tourism services are about information and interpersonal skills. Dress neatly and suitably for walking or standing. Maintain patience and calm, especially with large groups or challenging conditions like heat. Handle suggestions politely and explain reasons for any limitations.
Special care is needed for elders, children, and persons with specific needs. Offer help, remind about uneven ground, suggest rest points, and encourage hydration.
Share helpful tips before the tour starts, such as carrying umbrellas, wearing comfortable shoes, and keeping food packets inside bags.
11.9.3 After the service:
Collect feedback through written forms or audio/video comments to understand strengths and areas for improvement. Ensure the site is cleaned and restored, segregate waste into dry and wet categories, and dispose responsibly. This reflects respect for the environment and responsible tourism.
A task is suggested to list waste generated, steps taken to reduce waste, and disposal methods.
Documenting the tour through write-ups or photo stories helps share experiences and promotes the service, respecting confidentiality and obtaining permissions.
A case study from Government High School provides examples of schedules, checklists, and engagement practices.
