6.2 Area

Area is the measure of the surface covered by a two-dimensional shape. It tells us how much space is inside the boundary of the shape, unlike perimeter which measures the length around the shape. Area is expressed in square units such as square centimeters (sq cm), square meters (sq m), etc. The area of rectangles and squares can be found by multiplying their length and width or side length squared respectively. For example, a floor 5 m long and 4 m wide has an area of 5 × 4 = 20 sq m. If a square carpet of side 3 m is placed on the floor, the carpet covers 3 × 3 = 9 sq m. The remaining floor area not covered by the carpet is 20 - 9 = 11 sq m. Understanding area is essential for tasks like tiling floors, painting walls, or laying carpets.
