Introduction

Health is the foundation of life, enabling individuals to learn, work, and enjoy daily activities. Healthcare is not limited to hospital visits during illness but encompasses daily practices such as maintaining clean surroundings, consuming safe water and nutritious food, engaging in physical activity, supporting mental well-being, and timely care. India has a rich tradition of healthcare that includes both preventive and curative practices. Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers play a crucial role in rural healthcare by linking communities with formal medical facilities. ANMs focus on maternal and child health and immunisation, while ASHA workers, usually local women volunteers, spread awareness about nutrition, hygiene, family planning, provide basic first aid, and assist patients in reaching hospitals. These workers were recognized as 'Corona Warriors' during the COVID-19 pandemic for their tireless efforts in awareness, vaccination facilitation, and medicine delivery. Ancient texts like the Charaka-Samhitā (100 BCE–200 CE) laid down principles of healthy living, disease prevention, diagnosis, diet, and treatment, emphasizing observation, patient history, lifestyle, and mind-body balance. Many of these ideas continue to influence modern wellness in India. This chapter aims to help students understand healthcare services and how they can support community health.
