TEXTURE
Texture in design refers to the sensory impression of sight and touch, describing the tactile and visual qualities of a material. It influences the aesthetic appeal and the perceived comfort and suitability of fabric and apparel. Texture can be described by how a material looks (shiny, dull, opaque, transparent, glossy), behaves (limp, stiff, clinging, flowing), and feels (soft, crisp, harsh, smooth, rough). Textile materials are primary contributors to texture in daily life. Factors determining texture include fibre content (type, length, fineness, surface characteristics), yarn processing and type (twist, fineness, novelty yarns), fabric construction (weaving, knitting, felting, braiding), fabric finishes (starching, sizing, ironing, napping), and surface ornamentation (tufting, embroidery, flock printing). In dress design, texture creates interest and enhances desirable features of the wearer. Textures should harmonize and be appropriate to the figure, personal characteristics, garment silhouette, and occasion. Understanding texture helps designers select suitable materials and finishes to achieve desired effects.
