COLOUR SCHEMES OR COLOUR HARMONIES

Colour schemes or colour harmonies are guidelines for combining colours effectively in design to create pleasing visual effects. They help designers select hues that work well together, considering value, intensity, and quantity. Colour schemes are broadly classified into related and contrasting groups. Related schemes share at least one hue in common and include: monochromatic harmony (variations of one hue in value and intensity), achromatic harmony (using only neutrals like black and white), accented neutral (one hue combined with a neutral), and analogous harmony (two or three hues adjacent on the colour wheel). Contrasting schemes include complementary harmony (two hues opposite on the wheel), double complementary (two pairs of complements), split complementary (a hue, its complement, and a neighbour), analogous complementary (a complement dominant among neighbours), and triadic harmony (three hues equidistant on the wheel). Understanding and applying these schemes helps create balanced and attractive fabric and apparel designs.
