7.8 Basics of apparel making
Apparel making involves several key steps: sewing, drafting, fabric preparation, marking, cutting, and finishing. Sewing is the fundamental skill, involving handling needle and thread to join fabric pieces. Hand stitching requires care to keep stitches straight, even, and consistent in tension to avoid damage or weak seams. Various stitch types serve different purposes: running stitch for temporary seams, backstitch for strong seams and repairs, split stitch for embroidery, buttonhole stitch for buttonholes and edge protection, and hemming stitch for finishing hems. Practicing these stitches on sample cloth helps develop competence. Safety is critical, especially when using sewing machines—machines should be placed on stable surfaces, fabric should hang on the left, and users should sit upright aligned with the needle. Avoid pulling fabric while sewing; it moves automatically. Drafting involves marking measurements and drawing the apparel shape on paper to create reusable patterns, ensuring accuracy and reducing fabric wastage. Fabric preparation includes pre-washing to prevent shrinkage, ironing to remove wrinkles, and folding fabric edges (selvage) together. Marking and cutting fabric must be done carefully along the pattern lines with seam allowances, using long smooth cuts and keeping scissors parallel to the surface. Quality cutting prevents uneven edges and fabric wastage. Sewing the fabric pieces requires securing seams with backstitches at start and end to prevent loosening. Uneven stitching affects appearance and durability. Finishing involves trimming or overlocking raw edges to prevent fraying, and hemming edges for neatness and strength. Surface decoration such as embroidery, painting, patchwork, tie-and-dye, block printing, quilting, and bead or sequin work can enhance the apparel’s aesthetic appeal. Finally, packaging and labeling protect the apparel and provide important information such as size and care instructions, facilitating customer communication and product presentation.
