What is Matter?

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Everything around us, including the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the objects we use, is made up of matter. Matter exists in different forms or states such as solids, liquids, and gases. These states differ based on the arrangement and movement of their particles. Solids have fixed shape and volume, liquids have fixed volume but take the shape of their container, and gases have neither fixed shape nor volume. The study of matter includes understanding its composition, properties, and changes it undergoes. The fundamental idea is that matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms and molecules, which are too small to be seen with the naked eye. These particles are in constant motion, and their behavior explains the properties of matter in different states.

Elements consist of only one type of atom, for example, oxygen (O2), gold (Au), and hydrogen (H2). Compounds consist of two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions, such as water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sodium chloride (NaCl). Pure substances have uniform properties throughout the sample and a definite melting and boiling point. The purity of a substance is important in scientific experiments and industrial applications because impurities can affect the behavior and properties of the substance.
