The earliest known device for calculation is the abacus, developed around 3000 BC in China. Over time, various mechanical devices were invented, such as Napier's Bones (1617) by John Napier and the Slide Rule (1620) by William Oughtred. Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline in 1642, a mechanical calculator capable of performing addition and subtraction. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz improved upon this with the Leibniz Calculator (1671), which could also multiply and divide. Charles Babbage, known as the 'Father of the Computer,' designed the Difference Engine (1822) and the Analytical Engine (1837), which introduced the concept of programmability. Ada Lovelace is recognized as the first computer programmer for her work on Babbage's Analytical Engine. The 20th century saw the development of electromechanical and electronic computers. Herman Hollerith invented the punched card machine in 1889, which was used for the US Census.
