Our Environment | Class 10 Science Notes

Our Environment – this guide gives you a concise, exam-ready overview of Our Environment from Class 10 Science, written by ConceptScroll editors and reviewed against the latest NCERT textbook.

Producers, Consumers and Decomposers

Organisms in an ecosystem can be categorized based on their mode of obtaining food into producers, consumers, and decomposers. Producers, mainly green plants and certain bacteria, synthesize organic compounds like sugars and starch from inorganic substances using sunlight through photosynthesis. Consumers depend on producers directly or indirectly for food and include herbivores (plant-eaters), carnivores (meat-eaters), omnivores (eat both plants and animals), and parasites (organisms living on or inside others). Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organisms and waste products into simpler inorganic substances, recycling nutrients back into the soil for use by plants. This cycle maintains ecosystem health by preventing accumulation of dead matter and replenishing nutrients.

🧪 Activity: Activity 13.2: Discussing dependencies among producers, consumers, decomposers; arranging aquatic organisms in a food chain; considering primary importance of groups.

🔗 Connection: Leads to understanding food chains, food webs, and trophic levels.
