5.7 Types of Motion

Motion can be classified into three main types: linear, circular, and oscillatory motion. Linear motion occurs when an object moves along a straight line, such as a car moving on a straight road or an eraser dropped from a height. Circular motion occurs when an object moves along a circular path, like a merry-go-round or an eraser tied to a thread and whirled around. Oscillatory motion is when an object moves to and fro about a fixed position, such as a pendulum or a swing. These motions are periodic if the object repeats its path after fixed intervals of time. The chapter includes several activities to help students observe and identify these types of motion, such as dropping an eraser, whirling an eraser tied to a thread, and observing swings and metal strips moving up and down.
