5.5 Describing Position

Describing the position of an object involves stating its distance from a fixed point called a reference point. For example, Deepa and her friends discuss whether a nearby garden or their school is closer to their homes. Each has a different opinion because they are considering distances from their own houses. However, if they all consider the same reference point, such as the bus stand, their observations would be consistent. A reference point is a fixed object or location from which distances are measured. This concept is important because the position of an object is always relative to a reference point. For example, kilometre stones on roads indicate the distance from a city, which is the reference point. As a person travels, the distance from the reference point changes, indicating motion. This section also describes how Deepa and friends help draw lines for a Kabaddi court by choosing a reference point on the ground and measuring distances from it. Understanding reference points is essential for describing motion and position accurately.
