6.3 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY?
Communication technology refers to the various technologies developed and used to handle information and aid communication. It encompasses hardware, organizational structures, and social values that enable individuals to collect, process, and exchange information. The rapid communication revolution has led to fast-changing technologies, with new tools emerging frequently to meet the demand for quick and accessible information.
Communication technologies are broadly classified into:
(i) Cable (land) based technologies: These are relatively inexpensive and less complex, such as landline telephones and personal computers without internet.
(ii) Wireless technologies: These require less infrastructure but can be costlier, including radio, microwave, satellite telephony, and Bluetooth technology.
Two significant communication technologies that revolutionized communication are radio and television. Radio has a universal audience and can overcome time and space barriers through on-the-spot or simulated broadcasts, aided by portable transistor radios. Television, introduced in India in 1959, primarily aimed at education and rural development, uses advanced techniques like visual magnification and sound amplification to enhance impact.
Modern communication technologies include microcomputers, videotext, electronic mail (e-mail), interactive video, and teleconferencing. Microcomputers vary in size and power and serve multiple functions like processing, record-keeping, research, and publishing. Bluetooth technology enables low-cost, short-range wireless communication between devices. Videotext allows interactive access to electronic text via TV. E-mail facilitates electronic message exchange. Interactive video combines text, photos, audio, and video for user-driven learning. Teleconferencing enables dialogue among geographically dispersed participants without travel.
While communication technology greatly facilitates information exchange globally, face-to-face communication remains essential for effective interpersonal interaction. Developing communication skills is vital for individuals to engage effectively in various contexts.

Frequently asked questions
1. What do you understand by the term communication? What are the various modes of verbal and non-verbal communication?

The process of communication involves several key elements:
1. Sender: The person who initiates the message. 2. Encoding: The process of converting the message into symbols, words, or gestures. 3. Message: The information or content to be communicated. 4. Medium/Channel: The means through which the message is sent (e.g., speech, writing, electronic media). 5. Receiver: The person who receives the message. 6. Decoding: The process by which the receiver interprets the message. 7. Feedback: The re
3. "The more the number of senses involved in the communication process, the more effective and sustainable is the communication". Write your comments with justification.
This statement is true because involving multiple senses (such as sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) in communication enhances understanding and retention of the message. When more senses are engaged, the message becomes richer and more impactful, making it easier for the receiver to comprehend and remember.
For example, a teacher using visual aids (sight), verbal explanation (hearing), and hands-on activities (touch) helps students learn better than just verbal teaching alone. This multi
4. How does media affect our day-to-day life? Enumerate the different types of media.
Media affects our daily life by providing information, entertainment, education, and influencing opinions and behaviors. It connects people globally, shapes cultural norms, and keeps us updated about current events.
Different types of media include:
- Print Media: Newspapers, magazines, books.
- Electronic Media: Television, radio.
- Digital Media: Internet, social media platforms, websites.
