Classification of Communication

Communication can be classified based on type of interaction, levels, modes, and involvement of senses. This classification helps understand the diversity and complexity of communication in different contexts.

A. Based on Type of Interaction: (i) One-way communication involves information flow from sender to receiver without immediate or any response, such as speeches, lectures, radio listening, or watching TV. (ii) Two-way communication involves exchange between two or more persons with feedback, such as phone conversations, discussions, or a baby crying and being fed.

B. Based on Levels of Communication: (i) Intra-personal communication is communication with oneself involving mental processes like thinking and rehearsal. (ii) Inter-personal communication involves face-to-face sharing of ideas using verbal and non-verbal means. (iii) Group communication includes more than two persons, facilitating participation and collective decision-making. (iv) Mass communication uses mechanical devices to disseminate messages to large, heterogeneous, and anonymous audiences, e.g., radio, TV, newspapers. (v) Intra-organisational communication occurs within structured organisations among departments and levels. (vi) Inter-organisational communication occurs between different organisations for cooperation and coordination.

C. Based on Means or Modes: (i) Verbal communication uses auditory means like speaking and singing. (ii) Non-verbal communication uses gestures, facial expressions, posture, writing, symbols, and sign language.

D. Based on Number of Senses Involved: Learning is more effective when multiple senses are involved. For example, people remember 90% or more of what they see, hear, and do compared to only 10% of what they read.

This classification provides a framework to analyze communication in various real-life situations and media.

3. "The more the number of senses involved in the communication process, the more effective and sustainable is the communication". Write your comments with justification.

This statement is true because involving multiple senses (such as sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) in communication enhances understanding and retention of the message. When more senses are engaged, the message becomes richer and more impactful, making it easier for the receiver to comprehend and remember.

For example, a teacher using visual aids (sight), verbal explanation (hearing), and hands-on activities (touch) helps students learn better than just verbal teaching alone. This multi
