The Sources of Constraints
Constraints on freedom arise from various sources including domination, external controls, and social inequalities. Domination can be enforced by force or through government laws backed by coercion, as seen in colonial rule or apartheid regimes. While some form of government is inevitable, democratic governments allow citizens some control over rulers, thus protecting freedom. Social inequalities such as caste discrimination or extreme economic disparities also restrict freedom by limiting opportunities and rights for certain groups. Subhas Chandra Bose emphasized that true freedom requires not only political independence but also social emancipation including abolition of caste barriers, equal wealth distribution, and elimination of communalism and religious intolerance. These social constraints can be deeply embedded and require active efforts to remove. Understanding the sources of constraints helps in identifying which restrictions are unjust and need to be challenged to achieve comprehensive freedom for all individuals and communities.
🧪 Activity: Debate the statement: 'Girls and boys should be free to decide whom they wish to marry. Parents should have no say in this matter.'
🔗 Connection: This section connects to 'Why Do We Need Constraints?', which explains the necessity of some constraints in maintaining social order.
