2.2 WHAT IS FREEDOM?

Freedom is fundamentally defined as the absence of constraints. An individual is free when not subject to external controls or coercion and can make independent decisions and act autonomously. However, freedom is not only about the absence of constraints; it also involves the expansion of people's ability to express themselves and develop their potential. A free society enables all its members to grow their talents with minimal social constraints. Since total absence of constraints is impossible in society, it becomes necessary to distinguish between justified and unjustified constraints. This requires examining the relationship between the individual and society, identifying which social features allow freedom and which restrict it. The concept of Swaraj in Indian political thought parallels freedom, combining self-rule and rule over oneself. Mahatma Gandhi emphasized Swaraj as self-governance, involving self-respect, responsibility, and liberation from dehumanizing institutions. The ideal of freedom thus includes both political independence and social emancipation, enabling individuals and communities to flourish. Constraints may arise from domination, government laws, social inequalities such as caste or economic disparities. Democratic government is important in protecting freedom by allowing people control over rulers. Subhas Chandra Bose highlighted freedom as all-round, encompassing political emancipation, social equality, and economic justice. This comprehensive understanding of freedom underscores its complexity and the need to balance individual liberty with social justice.
