3.3 THREE DIMENSIONS OF EQUALITY
Equality can be pursued across three main dimensions: political, social, and economic. Political equality involves equal citizenship rights such as voting, freedom of expression, movement, association, and belief. These legal rights enable citizens to participate in state affairs and develop themselves. However, political equality alone may not eliminate inequalities arising from social and economic disparities. Social equality requires equality of opportunities, ensuring all groups have fair chances to compete for social goods like education, health care, and employment. It also involves minimizing social customs and discrimination that hinder equal participation, such as gender biases or caste-based restrictions. Economic equality refers to reducing significant differences in wealth, property, and income. While absolute economic equality is rare, democracies strive to provide equal opportunities for individuals to improve their conditions. Entrenched economic inequalities over generations can lead to social divisions and conflict. The section also introduces feminism as a political doctrine advocating equal rights for women and men, challenging patriarchy and gender-based inequalities. Feminists distinguish between biological sex and socially constructed gender roles, advocating for elimination of gender-based divisions in public and private spheres. The section concludes by contrasting Marxist and liberal perspectives on inequality and its remedies, with Marxists emphasizing public control over resources to reduce inequality, and liberals emphasizing competition and equal opportunities within a regulated framework.
