TYPES OF FORESTS

Indian forests are classified into five major types based on climatic conditions and predominant vegetation characteristics. These types reflect the diversity of India's climate and topography. The five major forest types are: (i) Tropical Evergreen and Semi Evergreen forests, (ii) Tropical Deciduous forests, (iii) Tropical Thorn forests, (iv) Montane forests, and (v) Littoral and Swamp forests. Each type is adapted to specific rainfall, temperature, and soil conditions. Tropical Evergreen forests thrive in warm, humid regions with high rainfall, while Tropical Deciduous forests are found in areas with moderate rainfall and distinct dry seasons. Thorn forests occur in arid and semi-arid regions with low rainfall. Montane forests exist in mountainous areas where temperature decreases with altitude, causing changes in vegetation. Littoral and Swamp forests are found in wetland habitats, including coastal and deltaic regions. Understanding these forest types is crucial for forest management, conservation, and sustainable use of forest resources in India.
