BIOSPHERE RESERVES
Biosphere Reserves are unique and representative ecosystems of terrestrial and coastal areas recognized internationally under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Their objectives include conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable development, and supporting research and education. India has 18 Biosphere Reserves spread across various states, representing diverse ecosystems from mountains to coastal areas. Twelve of these reserves are included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves recognized by UNESCO. Some notable Biosphere Reserves include Nilgiri (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka), Nanda Devi (Uttarakhand), Sunderban (West Bengal), and Gulf of Mannar (Tamil Nadu). These reserves protect rare and endangered species and serve as sites for ecological research and monitoring. Special schemes like Project Tiger and Project Elephant are often integrated within Biosphere Reserves to enhance conservation efforts. Biosphere Reserves balance conservation with human activity, promoting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
