Promoting Positive Health and Well-being
Positive health and well-being involve managing life’s pressures constructively and maintaining balance. Some individuals demonstrate stress resistance or hardiness, characterized by commitment, control, and challenge (the three Cs). Hardiness reflects beliefs about oneself and the world, enabling individuals to perceive changes as opportunities rather than threats. Life skills such as assertiveness, time management, rational thinking, improving relationships, self-care, and overcoming unhelpful habits (perfectionism, procrastination) help individuals meet life’s challenges effectively. Assertiveness enables clear communication of needs and feelings; time management helps prioritize valued activities; rational thinking challenges distorted negative thoughts; improving relationships involves effective communication and acceptance; self-care includes healthy breathing and relaxation; overcoming unhelpful habits reduces vulnerability to stress. Positive health is also promoted by balanced diet, regular exercise, positive attitude, optimistic thinking, and social support. Social support provides tangible, informational, and emotional assistance, buffering stress and enhancing psychological well-being. Resilience, the capacity to bounce back from adversity, depends on social strengths (I HAVE), inner strengths (I AM), and problem-solving skills (I CAN). These factors collectively foster health and enable individuals to cope with stress and trauma.
