Types of Urban Local Bodies and Their Funding
Urban local bodies in India are classified based on the population size of the city or town they govern. Cities with a population above 10 lakhs have a Municipal Corporation (also called Mahanagar Nigam) as their highest urban local body. Cities with populations between 1 lakh and 10 lakhs have a Municipal Council (Nagar Palika), while smaller towns have a Nagar Panchayat. These bodies are responsible for managing local affairs and providing civic services. Funding for their activities comes from various sources including local taxes (property tax, water charges), fines, fees for licenses, and paid services such as water tankers or mobile toilets. The Indore Municipal Corporation’s list of services illustrates how some services are paid, contributing to the body’s revenue. Understanding the classification helps citizens know which body governs their area and how these bodies sustain their operations financially. This classification also reflects the scale and complexity of urban governance required for different sized urban centers.
