5.6 APPLICATIONS OF INTERNET
The Internet provides a wide range of services facilitating communication, information sharing, and entertainment. Key applications include the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail (email), chat or instant messaging, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The WWW is a vast collection of interlinked web pages accessible via the Internet, invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990. It uses technologies like HTML for page design, URI/URL for resource identification, and HTTP/HTTPS protocols for data transfer. Email enables sending and receiving messages and attachments globally at any time. Chat allows real-time text communication between individuals or groups, often including audio and video calls, supported by applications like WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook Messenger. VoIP transmits voice calls over the Internet by converting analog voice signals into digital data, offering cost-effective and portable telephony. However, VoIP call quality depends on Internet speed. These applications have transformed how people communicate, access information, and conduct business worldwide.
🔗 Connection: Following the applications, the chapter explains the structure and types of web pages and websites.
