Communities, Nations and Nation-States
A nation is a large-scale community composed of many smaller communities sharing a desire for political unity, often aspiring to form a state. The state is defined as a political-legal entity with control over a geographical territory and its people, famously described by Max Weber as the entity that claims a monopoly over legitimate force in a territory. However, defining a nation is complex because nations do not always share common language, religion, or ethnicity, and these cultural markers can cross national boundaries. Unlike ethnic or religious communities, nations typically have a state of their own, forming a nation-state. Historically, many states governed multiple nations (e.g., the Soviet Union), and many nations exist across multiple states (e.g., Jewish diaspora). Modern political legitimacy is often based on nationalism and democracy, where the nation is the source of legitimacy for the state. However, there is no fixed relationship between community identity and the nation-state, leading to challenges in managing diverse communities within a single nation-state. States often seek to create a singular national identity to maintain unity, sometimes suppressing cultural diversity, which can provoke resistance and alienation. India is an example of a nation-state that has embraced cultural diversity rather than forced homogenization.
