Regionalism in the Indian Context
Regionalism in India arises from its vast diversity in languages, cultures, tribes, and religions, often concentrated geographically. Indian federalism has accommodated these regional sentiments by reorganizing states primarily on linguistic lines. Initially, after Independence, India retained the British colonial provinces, which were multi-ethnic and multilingual. However, popular agitations demanding states based on linguistic identity led to the creation of linguistic states, formalized by the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) in 1956. The SRC's report was a turning point, affirming linguistic states as a means to strengthen Indian unity rather than weaken it. The martyrdom of Potti Sriramulu, who fasted to death demanding a Telugu-speaking state, was a catalyst for this reorganization. While language has been the primary basis for state formation, some states like Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, and Jharkhand were created based on tribal identity, regional deprivation, and ecological factors. The Indian Constitution provides a federal structure that balances powers between the Centre and States, ensuring autonomy and viability of these units. This regional accommodation has helped India avoid fragmentation and maintain unity in diversity.
