Urbanisation in Southern Mesopotamia: Temples and Kings
This section examines the emergence of early cities in southern Mesopotamia from settlements dating back to 5000 BCE. Some cities developed around temples, which were considered the residences of gods like the Moon God of Ur or Inanna, the Goddess of Love and War. Early temples were small shrines made of unbaked bricks, evolving into larger structures with multiple rooms and open courtyards. Temples owned agricultural fields, fisheries, and herds, and managed production activities such as oil pressing, grain grinding, spinning, and weaving. They employed merchants and kept written records of distributions, becoming central urban institutions. Conflicts over land and water were common due to irrigation challenges and competition among villages. War leaders emerged, distributing loot and employing prisoners, gaining influence and beautifying temples. This led to the rise of kingship, which organized labor and commanded resources. The city of Uruk expanded significantly around 3000 BCE, with defensive walls and population shifts from villages to the city. Bronze tools and architectural innovations like brick columns and the potter's wheel supported urban growth. Temples and kings were mutually reinforcing institutions central to early urban society.
