Preparation of Soil

Preparation of soil is the first and most important step in crop production. Soil preparation involves loosening and turning the soil to make it suitable for sowing seeds. This process is called tilling or ploughing. It helps to aerate the soil, improve water retention, and remove weeds and old roots. The soil becomes soft and porous, which facilitates the penetration of roots and the absorption of nutrients and water. Traditionally, farmers used wooden ploughs pulled by bullocks, but now tractors and mechanized ploughs are commonly used for faster and more efficient soil preparation. After ploughing, the soil is leveled and broken into smaller pieces by harrowing, which helps in creating a fine seedbed. Proper soil preparation also helps in mixing organic matter and fertilizers evenly in the soil, which is essential for healthy plant growth. The quality of soil preparation directly affects the germination of seeds and the overall yield of the crop.
