Tricki’s Recovery and Socialisation with Other Dogs

At the surgery, Tricki is initially listless and ignored by the other dogs. The narrator places him in a warm loose box next to the other dogs. For two days, Tricki is given no food but plenty of water, allowing his system to rest. On the third day, he begins to show interest in his surroundings and whimpers when he hears the other dogs. When allowed out, Tricki is immediately sniffed and inspected by Joe, the greyhound, and his friends, who then accept him. At feeding time, the other dogs rush to their bowls, eating rapidly to avoid competition. Tricki initially licks the bowls casually but soon begins to jostle for his share when an extra bowl is added for him. His progress is rapid thereafter; without any medicinal treatment, he runs about with the other dogs, engaging in friendly scrimmages and discovering the joys of active play. He becomes an accepted member of the pack, fighting for food and hunting rats at night. This transformation from lethargy to lively activity marks a turning point in Tricki's recovery, emphasizing the importance of exercise and social interaction in health.
